new infill construction in the highland park historic overlay zone (hpoz) for a long-time multi-generational family. the project was designed to fit into the historic context of the neighborhood which includes a mix of english cottage and spanish style houses on narrow lots. a simple form with nods to both styles, but tending away from the excesses of either. flat clay tile roof and recessed steel windows both extend the existing palette but subtly differentiate it to clearly mark this structure as an intervention. the second floor is largely under the steep roof to reduce the bulk that a regular two story house would show while staying under the height restriction.
