rebuild of existing historic rear dwelling unit in the angelino heights historic overlay zone (hpoz). the structure was moved to the site in the 1920’s from south la, likely during the building of the harbor freeway and was originally a single wall construction agricultural building that had been repurposed as a small dwelling. the house never had a foundation, it just sat in the dirt after it was moved. all original framing that could be saved was gently held in place by scaffold as the entire termite eaten lower structure was replaced and new foundation was poured. the original 12inch wide single wall boards were repurposed as cladding on the exterior. this was our first major foray into rehabilitating historic structures and the lessons learned about single wall construction would inform later projects.
